Oldham County Greenways Project Oldham Ahead strongly supports the Greenways project in Oldham County. Below is an excerpt of a March 1999 article by Leslie Ellis of the Louisville Courier-Journal that provides some background on the project: Oldham walk April 16 will help people envision greenway By LESLIE ELLIS, The
Courier-Journal Mar 20,2000 Your chance to walk across
Oldham County -- and imagine a multiuse path from La Grange to Pewee Valley --
is coming April 16. You can walk the entire
10.5 miles or do a shorter walk by joining in farther along the route in the Ky.
146 corridor. That's where Greenways for
Oldham County, which is organizing the walk, wants to develop a pedestrian and
bicycle trail that will generally follow the path of the old interurban railroad
line flanking Ky. 146 that once linked the county to Louisville.
"We want to get the
community sparked about it," said Ann Clinton, the group's secretary and an
organizer of the Interurban Greenway Kickoff Walk. "We want to raise
awareness of the project and the group." Greenways is getting its
first major infusion of money this spring -- $320,000 in federal funds -- for
the first phase in the La Grange area. The
group began working on the project shortly after organizing in the summer of
1997 with the goal of preserving open spaces and creating a network of
recreational areas for walking and biking.
The
trail would link four communities, plus numerous schools and athletic
facilities, providing a way to get around the county without a car.
The group is still
researching who controls much of the right of way; the exact route of the path
has not been determined. The walk will start at the
Oldham County History Center in La Grange and follow Ky. 146 to Pewee Valley.
Walkers will be on sidewalks in some areas, on grassy shoulders in others, and
on the roadway in a few sections. In the Buckner area, the
route will shift to Old -La Grange Road, which runs parallel to Ky. 146 into
Crestwood. A sidewalk links Crestwood to Pewee Valley, where the walk will end
near the caboose. Information: Ann Clinton, (502) 241-6287. |
